Rainiers Bats Stay Hot In 10-6 Victory Over Las Vegas

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (22-21) rode right-handed starter Rob Whalen's fifth quality start of the season and a double-digit hit effort to defeat the Las Vegas 51s (17-26) by a final score of 10-6 Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.

Whalen (6-2) allowed just two earned runs across six innings during his ninth appearance of the season, striking out three and walking one en route to his team-leading sixth victory of the season.

Tacoma centerfielder Ian Miller (2x5, 2 RBI), second baseman Danny Muno (1x3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB) and catcher Chris Herrmann (2x4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) led the Rainiers offense in their ninth come-from-behind victory of the season.

After Christian Colon got the 51s on the board with an RBI groundout in the second inning, Muno crushed his first home run of the season to left field in the third, scoring designated hitter Mike Marjama and giving the Rainiers a 2-1 lead.

Las Vegas pushed across four runs in the fourth but Hermann countered with his fourth round-tripper of the season in the bottom half, a two-run shot that pulled Tacoma within two at 6-4.

A wild pitch and an RBI double from left fielder John Andreoli gave the Rainiers a 7-6 lead during the bottom of the fifth, then a three-hit sixth extended the Tacoma lead to 9-6.

Miller's eighth inning RBI single scored Herrmann and moved the score to 10-6 where it would remain through the end of the game.

Dario Alvarez (2.0 IP) and Mike Morin (1.0 IP) held the 51s without a hit over the final three frames while racking up three strikeouts. Alvarez tallied his third hold of the year.

The Rainiers and 51s return to action at Cheney Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. for the series finale. Righty Casey Lawrence (2-1, 1.80) will get the start for Tacoma, while Las Vegas has yet to name their starter.
