Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
DES MOINES, IA (May 19) - Glenn Sparkman enjoyed another excellent start for Omaha, and the Storm Chasers defeated Iowa 4-2 on Saturday night at Principal Park.
Omaha grabbed the lead in the top of the 3rd against Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay; Billy Burns doubled, advanced to 3rd on a fly ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan O'Hearn .
The Chasers added 3 runs in the top of the 5th. Billy Burns started the rally again, this time with a leadoff single. Jack Lopez also singled, and Frank Schwindel brought them both around with a 2-run double down the right field line. Two batters later, Cam Gallagher singled home Schwindel, and the Chasers led 4-0.
Alzolay (L, 2-3) was charged with 4 runs on 9 hits in 4.1 innings. He struck out 2 and walked 2.
Iowa pulled a run back in the bottom of the 6th inning; Steven Bruno reached on an error, and Wynton Bernard doubled him in to cut Omaha's lead to 4-1.
That was the only tally that Glenn Sparkman (W, 2-0) allowed, however. The Texas native pitched 7 stellar innings, limiting the Cubs to 4 hits, with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.
The Cubs crept closer in the bottom of the 8th against Josh Staumont; Wynton Bernard doubled, and Mike Freeman singled to make it 4-2.
Staumont worked through the rest of the inning however, and after the Cubs put the first two batters on base in the bottom of the 9th, Brandon Maurer (S, 2) was summoned to record the final 3 outs. Maurer obliged, inducing a double play and a groundout to give Omaha their 5th win in 7 games at Principal Park this season.
The Storm Chasers (16-26) will finish the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:08. RHP Trevor Oaks (2-3, 3.15) will throw for Omaha, while Iowa's starter is to be determined.
