Fresno Grizzlies News Release
The El Paso Chihuahuas (21-21) clawed past the Fresno Grizzlies (25-17) 8-7 in 10 innings Friday night from Southwest University Park. With the loss, Fresno drops to 4-6 in one-run affairs, 1-1 in extra innings and 12-10 on the road. Grizzlies' starter David Paulino did not factor in the decision. He hurled five innings, scattering five hits, four runs (earned) and fanning four. Chihuahuas' starter Jesse Scholtens also had a no-decision after four frames of work. He was charged with six hits, five runs (earned), one walk and three punchouts.
Fresno jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when J.D. Davis scored on an error.
El Paso quickly erased the deficit, grabbing a 3-1 advantage after back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the second. Shane Peterson (2-for-5) lifted his third homer to left-center and Diego Goris (3-for-5) blasted his fourth big fly to left field.
After a four-run top of the third, the Grizzlies held a 5-3 lead. Jake Marisnick smashed a two-run bomb to right field, his first of the season. Then, Tyler White belted a solo shot to left. His team-leading eighth clout extended his hit streak to a team-high 12 games and his on-base streak to 39 games. Finally, Jon Kemmer (2-for-3) laced a RBI single to left. It was his fourth straight game with a RBI.
The Chihuahuas cut the advantage to 5-4 when Allen Craig (2-for-4) singled home Peterson in the home half of the fourth.
Kemmer gave the Grizzlies a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth when he plated Nick Tanielu with a single to center. Tanielu picked up two hits in his Triple-A debut.
Goris trimmed the deficit to one when he pushed a RBI single to right field in the next half frame.
In the bottom of the ninth, Craig knotted the game 6-6 when he doubled to left field, scoring Goris.
Kyle Tucker gave Fresno a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th when he flew into a force out.
Down to his last strike in the bottom of the 10th, Goris pummeled a two-run single into left-center, giving the Chihuahuas an 8-7 walk-off win. Buddy Boshers (2-1) suffered the loss for the Grizzlies and Jose Castillo (1-0) earned the win for El Paso.
Antonio Nunez singled in the third, pushing his hit streak to seven games in the defeat.
Both teams continue the series with game three of four Saturday night from Southwest University Park. Fresno RHP Trent Thornton (3-2, 3.86) battles El Paso LHP Dillon Overton (0-0, 2.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PT.
