New Jersey Jackals News Release
Newark, N.J. - Leonard Davis and Kris Sanchez each collected three hits for the New Jersey Jackals, but Newark Bears' center fielder Tim Raines Jr. went 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles to push the Bears past the Jackals, 8-4, on Tuesday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The victory, Newark's sixth in a row, snaps New Jersey's three-game winning streak.
Raines Jr. doubled twice, scored twice, and drove in a pair of runs. For New Jersey, Sanchez went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs, and two RBIs while Davis singled twice, doubled, and drove in a run.
With the newly-signed Ryan Kulik on the mound for New Jersey, Raines Jr. gave the Bears a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single as Newark strung together three straight hits to begin the contest.
Sanchez evened the score with his first home run of the season leading off the third inning, but Newark answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on a Billy Alvino RBI single and a run-scoring groundout off the bat of Jeff Toth to make it 3-1. The Bears took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Daryle Ward.
The Jackals used a trio of run-scoring groundouts to tie the game at four, but Newark pounded out six extra-base hits in the sixth and seventh innings to plate four runs and put the game out of reach.
Jackals' reliever Mike Pontius (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in 1 1/3 innings while Newark starter Jacob Wild (2-1) surrendered four runs over six innings to pick up the win. Kulik, who signed with New Jersey earlier in the day, allowed four runs on 11 hits, 10 of them singles, over four innings.
The Jackals and Bears play the middle contest of their three-game series on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Chris Vasami (0-1, 15.00 ERA) to the mound for his third start of the season against Newark right-hander Aaron Kalb, who will be making his first start of the year.
