LAST GAME: Tim Raines, Jr. hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, and took the Can-Am League lead in RBI with 15, and Danny Santiesteban launched a solo homer, leading the Bears to an 8-2 win, their fifth straight victory, over the New York Federals Monday afternoon.

LEAGUE LEADERS: Catcher Billy Alvino continues his torrid hitting. Alvino is batting .394 for the young season, which is good for seventh in the Can-Am League. New Jersey's Argenis Reyes currently leads the league with a .450 mark. Outfielder Tim Raines, Jr. is batting .366, among the top ten in the league. Outfielder Danny Santiesteban is hitting .372 with two homers and 10 RBI, also among the league leaders.

TODAY'S STARTER: Right-hander Jacob Wild, who has been solid through two starts, earns his third start of the season today. Wild is a former member of the Seattle Mariners' organization.

FAMILIAR FACES: Jackals starter Chris Vasami is a former member of the Newark Bears, having pitched in 14 games with Newark last season. Jackals relief pitcher Jeff Gogal, the Can-Am League's Pitcher of the Week last week, hails from nearby Kearny and was a former hurler at Montclair State.

BIRTHDAY ODDITIES: Teammates Mikey Mehlich and Eric McGee were both born on the very same day, Sept. 5, 1987. Catchers McGee and Billy Alvino were born three days apart. Alvino was born on Sept. 2, 1987 and McGee three days later.

LOCAL FLAVOR: There are six New Jersey natives on the Bears roster, namely Eric Eden (Hillsborough), Aaron Kalb (Middletown), Jeff Toth (Parlin), Kyle Morrison (Middlesex), Paddy Matera (Toms River) and Burt Reynolds (Newark).

FIRST HOMETOWN PLAYER: Reynolds, who played high school baseball at Bloomfield Tech, is the first Newark native to play for the Bears since the franchise was re-established in 1999.

FAMOUS DAD: Todd Gossage is the son of Hall of Fame pitcher Rich "Goose" Gossage. The elder Gossage was a dominating closer for the Yankees during their championship run in the 1970s.

RETURNEES: There are five members of the Bears who played with the team before the 2011 season, namely Daryle Ward, Paddy Madera, Tim Raines, Jr., Danny Santiesteban and Mikey Mehlich.

FATHER AND SON REUNION: For the third straight season, manager Tim Raines and son Tim Raines, Jr. will join forces with the Bears. The younger Raines has played parts of the 2009 and 2010 season with Newark.

BEARS PITCHING ROTATION: Wednesday vs. New Jersey, Aaron Kalb, making his debut.

ESSEX COUNTY CHALLENGE: Today's game continues the Essex County Challenge between the two neighboring rivals. The Jackals currently own a 2-1 lead in the season series.
