NEWARK, N.J. (June 7, 2011) - Tim Raines, Jr. went 5-for-5, scored twice and increased his Can-Am League-lead in RBI with two more, giving him 17 on the season, leading the Newark Bears to their sixth straight victory, an 8-4 win over the New Jersey Jackals Tuesday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

With the win, the Bears (8-4) have evened the Essex County Challenge Cup series with the Jackals (6-5) at 2-2.

The Bears banged out a season-high 18 hits in the win. Besides Raines Jr.'s five-hit barrage, the Bears received three hits and two RBI from Daryle Ward and two hits each from Kyle LaMotta, Brandon Watson and Jeff Toth.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Watson singled to left on the inning's first pitch and moved to third on LaMotta's double. Raines, Jr. singled to centerfield to score Watson, good for Raines' 16th RBI of the season, but LaMotta was thrown out at the plate by Jackals' centerfielder Chris White.

The Jackals tied the game in the top of the third inning when first baseman Kris Sanchez blasted a long solo homer to right field, drawing New Jersey even at 1-1.

The Bears then took the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the third inning off Jackals' starter Ryan Kulik, who was making his Jackals debut. Raines, Jr. led off with a single, followed by a single by Ward. Danny Santiesteban walked to load the bases and after one out, Billy Alvino delivered a run with an infield single, breaking the deadlock. Toth then drove in another run with an infield out, giving the Bears a 3-1 lead.

Newark added another run in the bottom of the fourth on three consecutive singles from LaMotta, Raines, Jr. and Ward, pushing the lead to 4-1.

The Jackals sliced the lead to 4-2 with a run in the top of the fifth. White led off the inning with a walk, then stole second. He moved to third on an infield out and scored on an infield groundout from Leonard Davis, who had three hits on the game.

New Jersey then tied the game in the top of the sixth when Nick Giarraputo singled and moved to third on a double by Kris Sanchez, the third of his three hits on the game. Mike DeJesus and White drove in successive runs on ground outs to first base, tying the game at 4-4.

But the Bears came right back and scored three times in the seventh against reliever and losing pitcher Mike Pontius. Raines, Jr. started the rally with his fourth hit, a double, followed by an RBI double from Ward, an RBI single from Santiesteban and an RBI triple from Burt Reynolds, giving the Bears a 7-4 lead.

Wild (2-1) scattered eight hits over six innings to gain his second straight win. T.J. Hose pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, followed by Victor Gonzalez and Mikey Mehlich.

The Bears and Jackals will continue their series with a special 11 a.m. contest Wednesday morning, with Middletown resident Aaron Kalb slated to make his Bears debut.
