Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes relief pitcher Jonathan Cornelius was tagged for seven runs in the third inning. That pretty much did it on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Shaw Park.
With the score tied 2-2, the Blasters sent 11 men to the plate in the third, pounded out five hits and scored seven times as the visitors won the rubber match of a three-game series in Winnipeg, 11-4.
With the game delayed about two hours and 40 minutes by two separate rain showers, Goldeyes starter Matt Jackson was pulled from the game after two innings of work. That brought Cornelius to the mound, who was lit up for seven runs (only four of them were earned) in two-thirds of an inning.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 6-10 on the season. The Goldeyes completed their weeklong, six-game homestand with a record of 2-4.
After Joplin jumped out to 2-0 first-inning lead, the Goldeyes got a run in the bottom of the first as Casion Grider singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out by Brad Boyer and scored on a sacrifice fly by Casey Haerther, his team-leading 12th RBI of the season.
The Goldeyes tied it in the second when Jon Weber singled and came around to score on an infield hit off the bat of Brady Wilson.
That's when Joplin put up the big, crooked number in the third and the rest was just a formality.
The Goldeyes picked up a run in the third when Nic Jackson drove home Brad Boyer and then Winnipeg scored another run in the seventh when Luis Alen singled home Josh Mazzola, but it was all but decided by then.
Joplin finished with 11 runs on 14 hits, while the Goldeyes had four runs on 13 hits. Both teams had two errors. For Winnipeg, Casio Grider, Luis Alen and Jon Weber each had two hits while Josh Mazzola had three.
Joplin starter Nestor Molina (2-1, 1.99 ERA) picked up the win, while Cornelius (0-3, 12.38 ERA) was tagged with the loss.
The Goldeyes got on the bus right after the game and started driving toward Lincoln, Neb., where they'll play on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. On Thursday, they'll open a three-game weekend set in Sioux City, Iowa. All six games on the upcoming road trip can be heard live, with Steve Schuster at the microphone, on Jewel 100.5 FM.
The Goldeyes will return home on Monday, June 15 to play host to the first-place St. Paul Saints. Tickets for that series and all Goldeyes games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
