Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Ramapo, NY June 7 - After back to back sweeps in the win column the Gary South Shore RailCats found out how the other half lives. Stephen Cardullo stepped to the plate and hit a walk off home run just clearing the wall in left to send the Rockland Boulders to a 7-6 win and a sweep of the three game series Sunday in New York.
The RailCats got off to a good start in the first and looked like it might be a good Sunday. Jon Jones and Zac Mitchell both started the game off with back to back hits off of Boulder starter Bo Budkevics. With runners at the corners Mitchell broke for second and swiped the bag with the throw going into center field by Rockland catcher Marcus Nidiffer allowing Jones to score and Mitchell to head to third. Drew Martinez then brought Mitchell home with a sac fly RBI to give Gary a 2-0 lead.
That lead lasted only a few minutes as the Boulders jumped on RailCats started Travis McGee in the home half of the first. Junior Arrojo was hit by a pitch by McGee and was followed by back to back singles from Jared McDonald and Steve Nyisztor. The Boulders cut the lead in half on a fielder's choice grounder by Ryan Fischer and took the lead a batter later when Joe Maloney hit a three run blast to left and it was 4-2.
The RailCats grabbed a run in the third getting a leadoff double by Ryan Brockett of his three hits on the afternoon. With one out Zac Mitchell drove Brockett home with another double to cut the lead to 4-3.
In the fifth inning McGee got lead off batter Marcus Niddifer to pop up in foul territory but RailCats catcher Michael Vaughn dropped to keep the at bat alive. That allowed Niddifer to hit a solo home run and make it 5-3 in favor of Rockland. The Boulders added another run on an RBI from Ryan Fisher later in the inning and the score was 6-3.
The RailCats would chip away getting a pair of runs in the sixth with Roger Bernal and Ryan Brockett each getting RBI doubles to the lead to 6-5. The RailCats had yet to go deep in 2015, but that drought ended when Stephen Rogers, who was signed Sunday, hit a solo home run off of Chad Robinson in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 6-6.
That set things up for the ninth inning when Jessie Snodgrass surrender to winning run on the solo blast from Cardullo. Snodgrass had worked a 1-2-3 eighth for the South Shore and it was the first earned run that he had allowed this season.
The RailCats continue their nine game road trip with game one of a three game series at Sussex County in New Jersey at 6:05. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and RailCatsbaseball.com.
