Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Pawtucket, R.I. - A little bit of everything added up to a lot as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) clipped the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) Tuesday night, 4-3. SWB (24-23) secured the series win over the defending Governors' Cup champion and will bid for a sweep of Pawtucket (24-23) on Wednesday afternoon.
A three-run second inning gave the visitors an early lead. Run-scoring hits by Ben Gamel and Cole Figueroa sandwiched a run-scoring groundball double play off of Nick Noonan's bat against starter Jess Todd (1-1). Ramon Flores' RBI single in the fifth lengthened the lead to four.
During that time, SWB starter Joel De La Cruz (4-0) authored five frames of one-hit, scoreless baseball. Pawtucket did not get on the board until it plated three runs in the seventh against the RailRiders' bullpen.
Luke Montz doubled in a run to chase Diego Moreno. Against Danny Burawa, Mike Miller singled Montz home and with Tyler Webb in for a lefty-lefty match-up, Jackie Bradley, Jr. singled in a score to make it a one-run game.
Nick Rumbelow took the bullpen baton to start the eighth en route to two innings of scoreless and hitless relief for his fifth save.
The RailRiders conclude the three-game series and road trip at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday. Rehabbing right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (0-0, 0.00) will face fellow righty Keith Couch (2-5, 4.53).
The RailRiders return home on Friday, May 29 to face the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles) in the first of a six-game homestand. It will sport Friday Fireworks presented by Jack Williams Tire & Kumho Tire, a Fit Track School Day thanks to Odak and Strike Out Stroke Night presented by Geisinger Health Systems.
