Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights continued to flex their offensive muscle with a pair of home runs in a 9-5 victory over the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday night for their third consecutive win.
Matt Davidson and Leury Garcia each blasted home runs in the Knights victory, with Davidson tallying his International League-leading eighth long ball of the season.
Columbus outfielder James Ramsey gave the Clippers a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when he plated former Catawba College standout Jerry Sands from first base with a double to right-center field.
Davidson would lead off the bottom of the second and smack his second home run in as many days to tie the ballgame at 1-1. Trayce Thompson would double and score later in the inning to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage.
The Clippers tied the game again in the fourth inning when Ryan Rohlinger drew a bases loaded walk from RHP Kyle Drabek. The Knights starter would then get Francisco Lindor to line out to shortstop, ending the threat. Drabek would earn his first win of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits over 5.0 innings pitched.
The Knights took back the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Leury Garcia launched his first homer of the season, a three-run blast to give Charlotte a 5-2 advantage.
Columbus third baseman Giovanny Urshela cut the Knights lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning, scoring Ramsey with his fifth double of the season.
After a Neftali Soto RBI-single and a Davidson bases-loaded walk pushed the Knights lead to 7-3, Matt Tuiasosopo just missed a grand slam and settled for a two-run double off the top of the left-field wall.
The lead would be cut to 9-5 in the eighth inning when Ramsey hit a two-run homer off of Knights reliever RHP Maikel Cleto. The home run was the first allowed by Cleto this season and only the fourth base hit by a left-hander off of the Dominican native (35 left-handed batters faced).
The Knights and Clippers will continue their four-game series on Wednesday night, with another 7:05 p.m. first pitch scheduled. Wednesday's game will also feature an appearance by the world famous ZOOperstars!
