Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk used a fantastic relief outing from Eddie Gamboa and RBIs from Rey Navarro, Audry Perez and Nolan Reimold in a 3-1 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

Gamboa (3-3) was tremendous in relief of T.J. McFarland, who allowed one run in a planned one-inning start. Gamboa did not yield a hit over six shutout innings, striking out four while issuing four walks to help Norfolk earn its second straight win to open the series. The 30-year-old knuckleballer was effectively wild, throwing 52 of his 102 pitches for strikes as he lowered his ERA to 3.98 this season.

Steve Johnson worked the final two innings of the contest, striking out three to earn his first save of the season. It was the second career save for Johnson, who last registered a save in 2009 for Class-A Inland Empire.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Norfolk got two runs in the second inning to take the lead when Perez drove home Christian Walker with a one-out single before Navarro plated Michael Almanzar with a sacrifice fly. The Tides extended their lead to 3-1 in the fifth frame, when Reimold hit a two-out double that scored Ryan Flaherty.

Navarro, Perez and Dariel Alvarez each had two hits apiece in the win as the Tides (25-21) moved four games over the .500 mark.

The two clubs continue their four-game series Wednesday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 6:35 pm. Michael Bowden (3-1, 1.97) will get the start for Norfolk against right-hander Scott McGregor (3-3, 3.35).

McFarland was the eighth different starting pitcher the Tides have used over the last eight games...Playing second base, Ryan Flaherty went 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored in his second rehab game with Norfolk... Nolan Reimold doubled and scored in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to six games, over which he's hit .550 (11-20)...Norfolk has a 1.40 team ERA in five games vs. Syracuse this season.
