Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - The RailCats have announced the trade of outfielder Mike Coles and relief pitcher Chris Allen to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in exchange for reliever Dexter Carter and a player to be named later.

Coles, a Hammond native, was second on the team with a .300 batting average and 43 RBI. He had three home runs and a .393 on-base percentage. This was his second stint with the RailCats after playing for the club as a rookie in 2006.

Allen was 4-5 with a 3.32 ERA and was tied for the team lead with six saves.

Carter, a 6-foot-6 right-hander, is 1-3 with a 3.99 ERA and six saves this season for the Goldeyes. He has 44 strikeouts in 38.1 innings. A 13th Round pick of the White Sox in the 2008 Draft out of Old Dominion, Carter split his first four professional seasons between the White Sox and Padres organizations. He was dealt to the Padres as a part of the trade that brought Jake Peavy to the White Sox in 2009.

The 25-year-old Carter resides in Murfreesboro, N.C. He was a Pioneer League All-Star in 2008 and has 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings in his career. This is his first year in independent baseball.

In a corresponding move, the RailCats have activated right-handed pitcher Tyler Vaske off of the disabled list. The active roster currently stands at the league maximum of 22.
