LINCOLN, NE- The Wichita Wingnuts (44-31) lost 2-0 to the Lincoln Saltdogs (30-45) at Haymarket Park on Monday night.
Lincoln scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Matt Forgatch reached on an error charged to third baseman Greg Porter leading off. After Alberto Espinosa lined a single to right, Miguel Chacoa was hit by a pitch on a sacrifice attempt to load the bases with no outs. A.J. Miller drove in Forgatch from third with a groundball single to left. With the bases still loaded and no one out, Jared Simon relieved Nick Walters. Sean Smith followed with another groundball single to left that made it 2-0. Simon helped limit Lincoln to the two runs when Jimmy Rohan grounded into a home-to-first double play. Simon then retired David Espinosa on a flyball to left to end the inning.
Lincoln closer P.J. Zocchi retired the Wingnuts in order in the top of the ninth to earn the save.
Wade Mackey earned the win for Lincoln, throwing eight shutout innings on four hits. Mackey walked three and struck out five.
Anthony Capra pitched well for the Wingnuts, throwing six shutout innings in a no-decision. Capra walked four and struck out six.
David Peralta had two hits and has now hit safely in nine games in a row. Jessie Mier's 11-game hitting streak came to an end. Wichita did not have a runner past second base in the loss.
The series continues on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Rookie left-hander Chris Cummins makes his professional debut against Saltdogs' right-hander Brandon Sinnery.
