Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - RailCats starter Jon Gulbransen pitched seven outstanding innings and struck out a career-high eight hitters in the RailCats 2-1 win over the Saints on Monday night. The 'Cats took three out of four games against St. Paul to improve to 34-41 on the season.
Zac Mitchell and David Cooper led off the third inning with back-to-back walks against St. Paul starter Kyle Hurst. Adam Klein drove in Mitchell with a groundout and Mike Massaro hit a run-scoring single to center to give the RailCats a 2-0 lead.
Gulbransen retired the first nine batters he faced before allowing a single to Jim Rapoport to lead off the fourth. Ole Sheldon hit a sac fly to cut the 'Cats lead to 2-1 but it was all the Saints could muster on the night.
The Saints threatened in the sixth inning as Sheldon came back up to bat with runners on first and second and two outs. Sheldon fouled off seven pitches, including five in a row, but Gulbransen eventually won the battle, striking out Sheldon on the 12th pitch of the at-bat to end the frame and hold the 2-1 lead.
Gulbransen (3-1) went a career-high seven innings, allowing a single run on four hits. He did not allow a baserunner in five of the seven innings. It was Gulbransen's first quality start of the season, lowering his ERA to 2.94. Marco Gonzalez recorded his third save, retiring the side in order in the ninth inning.
Hurst (0-1) allowed two earned runs in four innings of work for St. Paul, walking four and striking out two. The Saints bullpen pitched five scoreless innings in relief.
