Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - It may the Tenth Anniversary of Gary SouthShore RailCats Baseball but the ‘Cats still have a number of franchise firsts to cross off their baseball bucket list. One of those items was checked off Saturday at U. S. Steel Yard as the RailCats captured their first season-series from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks with a 3-1 win.

The RailCats (40-26) cruised to their eighth victory in a row and seventh of the year over the RedHawks (30-36). The story on this night was the outstanding pitching turned in by both teams but especially the combination of RHP Ryne Reynoso (1-0, 1.80), sidewinding-reliever Will Krout and South Central alum Travis Minix for the RailCats. In his RailCats debut, Reynoso held the RedHawks to one run on six hits in five innings to earn the win. Krout needed just 35 pitches to get through three scoreless and hitless innings of relief adding a trio of strikeouts as well. Minix held the RedHawks without a hit earning his fourth save of the season while punching out a pair of Fargo hitters in the ninth.

Fargo jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Zach Penprase led off the game with a single and moved to second on a groundout by Carlo Cota. Nic Jackson's single drove in the RedHawks shortstop for the game's first run.

That's all the RedHawks offense could must against the ‘Cats as the home team needed just four hits to score three runs against Fargo starter Josh Smith who falls to 0-2 after allowing two earned with three walks and two strikeouts over his 4.2 innings Saturday. Chris Carrara came through with a two-RBI double in the second to drive in Kyle Haines and Mike Rohde and give the ‘Cats the lead for good. The RailCats tacked on an insurance run in the fifth. Carrara reached on an error by first baseman Kyle Nichols and advanced to third on an Adam Klein single. Massaro stepped up next laying down a safety squeeze bunt to allow Carrara to cross the plate and provide the final margin for victory.

NOTES: Cristian Guerrero extended his season-best hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the third...Mike Massaro's 13 game streak came to an end...Mike Rohde's seven consecutive games with a base hit was also snapped Saturday...The RailCats improved their league-best home record to 20-9 with the win.

The same two teams meet again Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. as the RailCats go for their ninth straight win, eighth consecutive victory over the RedHawks and the sixth series sweep of the season.
