Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
FT. WORTH, Tx.---The Captains came from behind with six runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Ft. Worth 8-3 at LaGrave Field Saturday night for their third straight win. Shreveport-Bossier rookie shortstop John Johnson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a ninth-inning RBI. Andres Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a double and his team-leading ninth home run of the year. Robert Perry was also 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of doubles.
Shreveport-Bossier won for its sixth time this year when trailing after eight innings. With the score 3-2 Ft. Worth, Alex Cowart led off the ninth and was hit with a 3-2 pitch by Cats closer Nick DeBarr (3-3). Joe Urtuzuaustegui moved Cowart over with a sacrifice bunt and Johnson tied the game with a two-strike single to center. Then the floodgates opened as seven straight Captains hitters reached base. The inning was highlighted by two run doubles by Robert Perry and Palmer Karr Jr. Karr's double broke an 0-for-16 drought at the plate.
Ft. Worth got off to an early lead for the second straight game with two runs in the third off Captains starter Josh Strawn. Cory Morales led off the inning with a double and took third on Derek Kinzler's single. A Will Calhoun ground out would plate the first run and a Marcos Rodriguez single made it 2-0.
Andres Rodriguez's solo homer in the fourth off of Cats starter Wade Mackey made it 2-1. Shreveport-Bossier would tie it in the fifth when Johnson scored on Perry's base hit.
The Cats threatened to regain the lead in the fifth when Kinzler tried to score from second with two out on a Ryan Patterson base hit. Captains leftfielder Cowart threw a strike to catcher Brian Peterson and Kinzler was out at the plate to end the inning.
Ft. Worth would take the lead however in the seventh on a Will Calhoun sacrifice fly.
Shreveport-Bossier reliever Jameson Maj (2-3) picked up his second win of the year in as many games by pitching a scoreless eighth inning and striking out the side. Rookie reliever Jose Velazquez, a righthander out of Florida International University, made his professional debut in the ninth inning throwing a scoreless frame and allowing one hit while striking out two.
The Captains imrove to 31-35 on the year and 14-22 on the road this year. Having taken the first two of three games from Ft. Worth, the Captains are ensured of winning their first road series since winning the first two series on their first road trip of the year in May. Shreveport-Bossier is now seven games behind St. Paul in the Wild Card race and 11.5 behind Grand Prairie in the American Association South Division.
