Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the El Paso Diablos 2-1 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.
Derek Blacksher and three Wingnuts' relievers limited the Diablos to just one run on eight hits over the course of the game. Blacksher earned the win, allowing one earned run in six and two-thirds innings, striking out three, walking two, and scattering seven hits. With the Wingnuts ahead 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Blacksher departed with the tying run on second and two outs. Logan Hoch came in and retired left-hand batting Stephen Douglas on a flyball to left that stranded the tying run in scoring position.
Marcos Tabata worked a scoreless eighth, recording all three outs on groundballs.
Josh Dew pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 13th save of the year. Alberto Espinosa led off the top of the ninth with a double to left-center, but Dew retired the next three batters in a row to preserve the win. Dew struck out Brian Joynt, induced a flyout to center from Maikol Gonazalez, and froze Kroy Drew with a called third strike that ended the game.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Jose Duran was hit by a pitch and took second on Mike Conroy's hit-and-run single to left field. Josh Horn laid down a sacrifice bunt up the third base line to put runners on second and third and two outs. Brent Clevlen lifted a deep flyball to the fence in right-center that scored Duran with the tying run. In an exciting play, Conroy attempted to score from second on the same flyball, but was ultimately thrown out at the plate after Espinosa withstood a collision and held onto the ball.
Wichita took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Edwin Bellorin led off with a double into the left field corner. Bellorin moved to third on Duran's groundout to second base, and scored when Conroy lined a sacrifice fly to center field.
Douglas drove in El Paso's lone run with a two-out, RBI single down the left field line in the top of the third.
Luis Montano started for El Paso and took the loss, allowing two earned runs on nine hits in seven and one-third innings. Montano walked none and struck out three.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Nick Singleton faces right-hander Alex Kaminsky. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
