Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - Jeff Beachum went 3-for-5 and gave the Gary SouthShore RailCats a lead they would not relinquish with a run-scoring double in the fifth as the ‘Cats finished off a three-game sweep of the Schaumburg Flyers with a 8-3 win Sunday afternoon in front of 4,559 fans at U. S. Steel Yard.

Beachum went 7-for-13 with four RBI and two doubles in the three-game set and improved his average to .395 in nine June games. The Northern League rookie delivered a two-out RBI single in the first, plated the go-ahead run with his double in the fifth and capped his night by singling and scoring a run in the seventh.

After the RailCats scored a run in the first off Ed Almonte (2-2), the Flyers answered with single runs in the third and fifth to take a 2-1 lead. But Rob Marconi started a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth with his second triple of the year and scored on a Steve Haake RBI single. Beachum's RBI double and a sacrifice fly from Mike Rohde put the ‘Cats in front 4-2, and they would not look back. Almonte allowed a season-high four earned runs in five innings to suffer the loss.

Grant Johnson (2-3), acquired via trade Saturday from Joliet, allowed two earned runs on four hits in 5.0 innings to earn the win in his first RailCats start. Eddie De la Cruz added 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to extend his scoreless streak to 15.2 innings, and Andy Shipman struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the victory.

The RailCats padded their lead with a three-run seventh, getting RBI hits from Anthony Esquer, Chris Carrara and Mike Massaro. All nine RailCats in the lineup had at least one hit as the RailCats pounded out a season-high 14 hits for the second time in the series. The ‘Cats scored 21 runs on 41 hits in the set, notching at least 13 hits in each game.
