Schaumburg Flyers News Release
GARY - The RailCats knocked 14 hits against five different Schaumburg pitchers and completed the sweep of the Flyers with an 8-3 win Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Steel Yard. Gary has now topped the Flyers 23 of the last 26 meetings. The loss is the Flyers' fourth in a row, and their fifth in their last six; the six game stretch is the worst of the season for the Flyers.
For the second consecutive night, Gary scored in the first. Mike Massaro led off the inning with a double and scored on Jeff Beachum's single. Jay Pecci also tried to score on the play, but was gunned down at the plate by left fielder Jeff Dunbar to end the inning. The RailCats would put at least two aboard each of the next three innings, but Flyers starter Ed Almonte stranded all of them.
Schaumburg tied the game in the third when Travis Brown led off the inning with a double then scored from third on a double steal. In the fifth, Jeff Dunbar led off with a double. Steven Yoo laid down a bunt that Gary starter Grant Johnson picked up and threw errantly into right field, allowing Dunbar to score from second and giving the Flyers their first lead.
The lead was short-lived, as Gary scored three times in the fifth on RBI hits from Steve Haake and Jeff Beachum, and a sac fly off the bat of Mike Rohde. Gary would put up another three-run frame in the seventh, putting the game out of reach with RBI singles from Anthony Esquer and Chris Carrara and an RBI sac fly from Massaro.
Almonte falls to 2-2 with the loss, and Gary starter Grant Johnson gets the win on his first day in a RailCats uniform.
The game ends a seventeen day stretch for the Flyers without a day off. They'll enjoy an off-day Monday before resuming action on Tuesday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet with ace Dustin Glant taking the ball.
