Goldeyes and JackHammers Spilt Double-Header

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (9-18) earned a doubleheader split with the Winnipeg Goldeyes (20-6) at Silver Cross Field on Sunday night as the Goldeyes won 3-0 in game one before the JackHammers won game two 2-0 before 3,643 fans at Silver Cross Field on Sunday night.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Goldeyes scored a pair of runs in the 3rd inning against LHP Brad Mumma (3-2). SS Wes Long (1-3) led off the inning with a single. 3B Brent Metheny (0-4) and RF Kevin West (0-2) each struck out looking. Long followed the strikeouts by stealing second and third base.

The JackHammers elected to intentionally walk DH Juan Diaz (2-2). The Goldeyes followed that move by executing a double-steal. With two runners in scoring position, LF Dee Brown (1-3) hit a two-run single to give the Goldeyes a 2-0 lead.

Winnipeg scored another run in the 6th inning. Diaz led off with a double and was lifted in favor of pinch-runner Adam Frost (0-0), who stole third base. Frost scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 Goldeyes.

Mumma pitched a complete game in the loss. He allowed three runs on six hits, walked four and struck out four.

The JackHammers scored two runs in the 2nd inning in game two of the doubleheader. DH Tydus Meadows (1-3) singled and went to second base on a sacrifice attempt by 3B Andrew Pinckney (0-1). The Joliet 3B reached first base on an error by Winnipeg 1B Cody Ehlers. LF Jamie McGraw (0-1) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position.

C Tug Gillingham (0-2) hit a ball to second base with Meadows scoring on a late throw by Winnipeg 2B Adam Frost for a 1-0 Joliet lead.

Pinckney moved to third base on the play. 2B Ryan Arcadia (0-2) reached on an error by Winnipeg 3B Brent Metheny to score Pinckney for a 2-0 JackHammers advantage.

That was all the support that RHP Rory Shortell (2-0) needed. He pitched five innings and allowed no runs on one hit. He walked two and struck out men.

Chad Blackwell (1) worked a scoreless 7th inning to get his first save of the season.

The JackHammers and Goldeyes finish their three-game series on Monday night at 6:05 p.m. It's Holy Half Price Monday for all group tickets. The JackHammers also present a special reading club night with students that participated in the National City Jammer's Book Buddies Program can exchange their reading club vouchers for tickets to the game.
