GARY, Ind. - The RailCats and Goldeyes split a doubleheader at U. S. Steel Yard on Saturday night with Winnipeg winning the opener 5-2 and the RailCats winning the second game by the same score. With the split, the RailCats are now 25-17 on the season, while Winnipeg is 21-19.
Winnipeg threatened in the first inning of game one against RailCats starter Will Krout. An error, a single and a walk loaded the bases with one out before Casey Haerther bounced into a double play to end the inning. Krout has induced a team-high 10 double play balls this season.
In the third inning, Danny Pulfer was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes after his strikeout. He was the first RailCat to be ejected from a game this season.
Goldeyes outfielder Leonard Davis left the game with an undisclosed injury after his fourth inning single, he was replaced by Nick Liles.
The RailCats finally broke through on a close call in the fifth inning. With Christian Vitters on second base with two outs, Zac Mitchell, batting for the first time, dropped a double down the left-field line that appeared to drop just inside the line. Vitters scored to give the RailCats a 1-0 lead.
Chase Tucker followed Mitchell's double with a base hit under the glove of the first baseman Casey Hearther to make it 2-0 RailCats after five innings.
Winnipeg rallied right back and knocked starter Will Krout out of the game. Amos Ramon, Josh Mazzola and Nick Liles each recorded hits to load the bases with nobody out. Casey Hearther followed with a sacrifice fly to right to cut the lead in half. Fehlandt Lentini then lined a solid base hit into left to tie the game.
Ian Durham came on after the single and put out the fire in the inning with a strikeout and a fly out to strand two Goldeyes on base.
Krout allowed two runs on nine hits, one walk and struck out four in 5 =A8=F7 innings to take his second consecutive no-decision.
In the top of the eighth, Marco Gonzalez allowed runners to second and third with one out. Boomer Potts came on and escaped the jam with a strikeout of the pinch-hitter Jordan Guida and a groundout by Luis Alen.
Winnipeg used a Gary error to grab the lead in the ninth. With one out, Mike Coles grounded to short but Zac Mitchell couldn't field it, allowing Coles to reach. With two out, Josh Mazzola hit a go-ahead single to left, with Coles scoring just ahead of Klein's throw from left. Nick Liles followed with an RBI double to right-center and Haerther capped the inning with a run-scoring single to left to give the Goldeyes a 5-2 edge.
Winnipeg closed out the victory ending the RailCats eight-game win streak with Patrick Keating in the bottom of the ninth. Keating allowed one hit on his way to his seventh save of the season.
Boomer Potts (1-1) was the tough-luck loser for Gary, giving up the three runs, all unearned. Brendan Lafferty (1-1) collected the win for Winnipeg.
The Goldeyes got in the board first in game two against RailCats starter Ari Ronick. Amos Ramon walked with one out in the first and scored on a two-out double by Casey Haerther.
Gary answered in the second inning off of Goldeyes' hurler Ryan Sasaki. Danny Pulfer hit a one-out double to the warning track in right. Brian Kolb followed with a run-scoring single to right to tie the game. With two out, Zac Mitchell blooped a go-ahead single to center to give the RailCats a 2-1 lead.
Winnipeg rallied back in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and third, Nate Samson grounded out to first to score Fehlandt Lentini to make it 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, the RailCats loaded the bases with nobody out to chase the starter Ryan Sasaki. Kaohi Downing replaced Sasaki and got Chase Tucker to ground into a fielder's choice, scoring Brian Kolb from third to take the lead.
Then after an Adam Klein walk reloaded the bases. Mike Massaro lifted a fly ball to right field that looked to be caught by right fielder Josh Mazzola and dropped on the transfer. Drew Martinez scored on the play and Winnipeg manager Rick Forney was ejected arguing the call. The RailCats led 4-2 after four innings.
The RailCats added another in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by Drew Martinez to make it 5-2.
Ari Ronick (4-3) fired five innings allowing two runs on five hits, three walks and struck out seven. He allowed one hit in each inning he pitched.
Ian Durham picked up his third save of the season allowing just an infield single in the top of the seventh. Durham was the only reliever to pitch in both games of the doubleheader. He threw 2/3 of an inning in game one before throwing a scoreless inning to close out game two.
The RailCats 11-game homestand comes to a close on Sunday with a 2:10 first pitch against Winnipeg. It's Times Family Sunday where fans can get four tickets, hot dogs and pop for $36 with a coupon from The Times. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.railcatsbaseball.com.
