Wingnuts Fall Short in Pitcher's Duel

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (28-15) lost 2-0 to the Sioux City Explorers (18-24) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Explorers' starter Jason Jarvis threw a seven-hit, complete game shutout to earn the win. Jarvis scattered seven hits, walked two, and struck out two on 115 pitches. It was Jarvis' third complete game victory against the Wingnuts over the last two seasons, all of which have snapped winning streaks of five or more games. Jarvis has not allowed an earned run in 27 innings during that stretch.

Sioux City scratched out two unearned runs against Wingnuts' starter Ryan Hinson to come away with the win. Anthony Kaskadden led off the game with a single down the right field line, took third on an error by Abel Nieves, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Sam Judah.

In the top of the fifth, Kaskadden singled to center field with one out. Leugim Barroso reached on an error by Jake Kahaulelio to move Kaskadden to second base. Judah followed with an RBI single to center field.

Hinson took the loss, allowing zero earned runs on seven hits in eight innings. Hinson walked two, struck out five, and lowered his season ERA to 1.90.

Daniel Bennett threw a scoreless top of the ninth for Wichita.

The Wingnuts put the tying runs on base with no outs in the bottom of the ninth before Jarvis recorded three consecutive outs to close out the game. Wichita grounded into three inning-ending double plays in the game.

Nieves and Jared McDonald each had two hits for the Wingnuts.
