Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The RailCats signed a former Major League first-round pick in left-handed pitcher James Adkins on Saturday. They also placed right-handed starter Stephen Hiscock on the inactive list retroactive to May 28.
Adkins began the year with the Grand Prairie AirHogs in the American Association and was 1-1 with a 6.42 ERA in three starts. He surrendered 15 runs, 10 earned in 14 innings with five strikeouts and six walks.
The Nashville, Tenn. native was selected No. 39 overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2007 draft out of the University of Tennessee. He spent four seasons in the Dodgers organization, reaching Triple-A in 2010. Adkins then pitched in 2011 in the Reds organization with Double-A Carolina and did not pitch professionally in 2012. In his career, the 27-year-old has a 16-26 record and a 4.91 ERA. Adkins had his best season as a rookie in Class A in 2007, when he was 0-1 with a 2.42 in 11 starts, striking out 30 batters in 26 innings.
During his time at Tennessee, Adkins became the Volunteers' all-time strikeout leader with 380 and ranks second all-time in games started, third in innings pitched and tied for third with 25 wins. He was second-team All-SEC in his junior season and a Freshman All-American in 2005.
Hiscock is 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA in three starts for the RailCats this season. He has 11 strikeouts and two walks in 16 innings and last pitched in the RailCats win on May 27 against Sioux City. Hiscock had missed the last two starts with shoulder inflammation.
The RailCats will host Sioux Falls for game two of a three-game series tonight at 6:10 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Yowie Rally Towel giveaway presented by First Midwest Bank.
