St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints faced one of the top pitchers in the American Association and were baffled for most of the night losing 7-2 to the Wichita Wingnuts on Saturday night in front of 4,044 at Midway Stadium.

Ryan Hinson, who had the seventh best ERA in the league, allowed just two hits through the first four innings, a one out double to Adam Frost in the first and a one out single to Joey Becker in the fourth. Both were left stranded and it wasn't until the fifth that Hinson made his first and only mistake of the game. With Ole Sheldon at first and two outs Dwight Childs deposited one over the left-center field wall, his third of the season. The home run got the Saints to within two at 4-2. Hinson went 7.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out six.

The Wingnuts, the second best hitting team in the league, responded in the top of the sixth. They sent nine men to the plate and scored three runs. Jared McDonald led off with an infield single to third. Ryan Khoury followed with a single to right-center, moving McDonald to third. Jake Kahaulelio singled home McDonald to make it 5-2 Wingnuts.. An intentional walk to John Rodriguez loaded the bases and then Saints starter Mark Hamburger walked CJ Ziegler to force in a run and make it 6-2. Hamburger left in place of reliever Dustin Klabunde who gave up a sacrifice fly to Cole Armstrong to finish the scoring. Hamburger went 5.1 innings allowing seven runs on eight hits while walking five and striking out two. Klabunde was superb out of the bullpen going 3.1 shutout innings of relief allowing one hit while walking two and striking out one.

The Wingnuts jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Khoury led off with a single and Kahaulelio hit a two-run homer to left, his second in as many games and fifth of the season.

The Wingnuts made it 4-0 in the fourth when Abel Nieves singled and with one out David Amberson singled. McDonald drove them both home with a double.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three games series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (3-0, 2.63) to the mound while the Wingnuts are TBA. It is "Who On First - A 75th Anniversary celebration of the famous comedy routine by Abbott and Costello. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
