Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - A ninth-inning rally by the RailCats fell short in an 8-6 loss to Sioux Falls on Saturday night at U. S. Steel Yard. Gary (11-10) lost for the fifth time in six games in dropping their second straight series.
Trailing 8-3 entering the ninth, Danny Pulfer reached on an error and Drew Martinez tripled to right-center to push him home. With two out, Chase Tucker walked and the Canaries went to the bullpen for their closer Alan DeRatt. Mike Massaro reached on an infield single to short, bringing the tying run to the plate in Cristian Guerrero. Guerrero hit a run-scoring single to pull the 'Cats to within two. With the winning run at the plate, Steve Liddle grounded out to the mound to end the threat and the game.
In the top of the first, Nick Van Stratten fouled off seven pitches as part of an 11-pitch at-bat against RailCats starter Alain Quijano that ended with a double down the left field line. The Canaries scored the game's first run on J.P. Ramirez's groundout to first later in the inning.
The Canaries added a run in third on Jake Taylor's base hit to make it 2-0. Taylor drove in Nick Van Stratten who tripled to lead off the inning.
Cory Morales led off the fourth inning with a double, was sacrificed over to third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Steve Domecus. A throwing error by RailCats shortstop Zac Mitchell led to an unearned run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-0.
Gary got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Brian Kolb singled and Pulfer reached on an error to start the inning. Tyler Smith, in his first start as a RailCat, drove in Kolb with a single to center to cut the lead to 4-1.
Taylor helped the Canaries get the run back in the sixth as he knocked in his second run of the game with a triple off the wall in left.
Sioux Falls added three more in the seventh against reliever Kyle Lindquist. With two outs, Nate Bauman continued his torrid five-game stretch with his fifth double in the last five games to drive in John Alonso and Tim Pahuta. Steve Domecus drove in Bauman with a single to left to give the Canaries an 8-1 lead.
Smith added a two-run double in the seventh to cut the deficit to 8-3. Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBI in his RailCats debut. Massaro had a pair of hits and has reached base safely in all 21 RailCats games this season.
Quijano (3-2) surrendered five runs, four earned in six innings, walked five and struck out four in a losing effort.
Despite rarely eclipsing 83 on the stadium's radar gun, Canaries starter Kyle Ruwe (3-2) kept the RailCats off-balance on his way to his third win of the season. Ruwe surrendered three runs on six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out two. DeRatt recorded the final out andl picked up his sixth save in as many chances.
The series finale is on Sunday afternoon at 2:10. Left-hander Ari Ronick (3-1, 2.92) will pitch for the RailCats against Canaries left-hander Mitchell Clegg (0-0, 6.75). It's Bark in the Park at the Steel Yard; dogs enter free (with valid shots). For more information log on to www.railcatsbaseball.com.
