RailCats Pitchers Have a Record Night, Still Lose 7-4
August 6, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- Karl Triana struck out a RailCats record 14 batters, but his team fell 7-4 in 11 innings to the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
The Gary SouthShore (37-34) pitching staff struck out 22 Goldeyes (40-29) to tie the American Association record. The RailCats, however, could not get the win in extras, a win which would have tied the Association record for most extra inning wins in one season with 10. The RailCats fell to 9-7 when going past nine innings.
Karl Triana was dominant in a six-inning start. The 23 year-old Colombian allowed seven base runners but got out of any tough spot with a strikeout. The bullpen added eight more strikeouts over the next five innings to tie the league record.
Duke von Schamann tossed a gem for Winnipeg as well. The Texas Tech product pitched seven innings and gave up one run on four hits. Mikey O'Brien earned the win for the Goldeyes in a one-inning relief outing.
The RailCats jumped out to the lead with a run in the 3rd inning. Chase Harris started the action with a double to left field. John Holland followed it up with a RBI single and made the score 1-0.
Triana and Melendez held the lead until Winnipeg broke through in the 8th inning. Travis McGee let up four hits and a walk to allow the Goldeyes to grab the lead. Carlton Tanabe had the big hit, a double that scored two runs.
The RailCats still had life after giving up the lead. Andy DeJesus hit a three-run home run over the left field fence to tie the game at 4-4. It was only DeJesus's second professional base hit.
The score remained tied until the 11th inning. The Goldeyes again put up a crooked number to take the lead. Jacob Rogers hit a bases clearing double to make it 7-4. Jorge de Leon gave up the hit despite throwing two solid innings before it.
The RailCats and Goldeyes continue their four game series tomorrow night in Gary. First pitch is at 7:10 and coverage begins at 6:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
