Wichita Wingnuts News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Wichita Wingnuts hit three home runs and Alex Boshers won his fifth straight start as the visitors took a 4-1 decision over the Lincoln Saltdogs Saturday night at Haymarket Park.
For the second straight game, Matt Chavez got the Wingnuts (45-26) off to a good start, giving them the lead with a two-out two-run homer off of Matt Larkins (6-5) in the first.
Lincoln (40-31) got one back in the home half, as a pair of knocks followed by a Curt Smith sacrifice fly brought the Saltdogs within a run.
The Wingnuts got that run back in the very next half inning, as Brennen Salgado launched his second homer of the series, a solo shot to make it 3-1.
The contest featured just one more run after the second, and it once again came on a long ball. Chavez led off the sixth frame with his second home run of the evening, making him the second Wingnut this season to post a multi-homer game, joining Brent Clevlen who hit a pair against Joplin on July 2.
After allowing the first inning run, Boshers (9-3) found his groove for Wichita, posting six straight scoreless frames. The righty faced one troublesome spot outside of the opening inning, loading the bases with one out in the seventh. Boshers wiggled out of trouble however, striking out Robby Kuzdale and inducing a pop up from Austin Darby.
For the night, the Wichita starter allowed one run on nine hits over seven, giving him his seventh quality start in a row, and ninth in 11 starts since joining the rotation. The righty has now won five straight starts, and six decisions in a row overall.
Behind Boshers, Seth Harvey and Chad Nading combined to work a scoreless eighth, before Frankie Reed slammed the door in the ninth to pick up his 14th save.
The Wingnuts aim for the series victory over the Saltdogs Sunday evening as the two clubs wrap-up their four-game set at Haymarket Park. Righty Eddie Medina (4-3, 5.24) is slated to get the start for Wichita, while Lincoln will counter with fellow right-hander Lindsey Caughel (5-3, 2.27). First pitch is set for 5:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
