Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers claimed their first win of 2016 in a bizarre finish to a closely contested ballgame.
The X's (1-6) worked the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning in a 3-3 game. RailCats' (2-5) pitcher Taylor Black was then called for a balk sending home the winning run.
The loss negates an outstanding day from Jose Sermo who went 3-3 and was a double short of hitting for the cycle. Jarek Cunningham was the hero for the X's after driving in three runs.
Black got the loss for the RailCats following a four-inning start for Karl Triana. Triana gave up three hits and two runs while walking three. Kevin Osaki and Andy Roberts combined for four innings and gave up one run. Connor Overton got the win for the X's.
The RailCats got on the board first with a run in the 2nd inning. Sermo led off with a single and advanced to second on a Tillman Pugh base hit. Jose Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody down. The Cats didn't find the clutch hit to spark a big inning, but Jarred Mederos' sacrifice fly was enough to score the game's first run.
Sioux City responded in the bottom half of the inning with some offense of their own. Tommy Mendonca walked to start the inning and the next batter, Cunningham, knocked a ball over the fence for a two-run homer.
The next run scored came in the top of the 4th when the RailCats tied the game at 2-2. Sermo began the inning with a triple and Pugh reached on a walk. Jose Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to center in the next at bat to score Sermo. The next two batters recorded outs ending the chance to add another run.
The X's claimed the lead again in the bottom of the 5th on a Cunningham single. The RailCats drew even once again in the 6th on their third one-run inning. Sermo hit a solo home run, his second on the season.
Both teams threatened in the 7th and 8th but the bullpens of both clubs were able to keep the game tied. The Cats went quietly in the top of the 9th and sent in Taylor Black, who has played the closer role to this point of the season, in the bottom of the inning.
Black walked the first batter he faced then gave up a single. The runners moved over on a groundout and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Then, on a 1-1 count to Cunningham, Black was called for a balk and the game was over.
The Central Division rivals are back at it tomorrow with the RailCats having one more try at leaving with the series victory. As always, the game will be broadcast on 95.9 WEFM and online at http://www.americanassociationbaseball.tv/. First pitch is 7:00 PM in Sioux City.
