Thomas Continues Hot Streak, Knocks in Four in 7-5 Saints Victory

ST. PAUL, MN - Tony Thomas continued his torrid start to the 2016 season. For the fourth consecutive game Thomas had a multi-hit day, drove in four and extended his hitting streak to eight games as the St. Paul Saints took down the Kansas City T-Bones 7-5 on Friday night at CHS Field in front of 6,282.

With the Saints trailing 1-0 going to the bottom of the second Angelo Songco doubled to lead off the inning. Thomas then hit a moon shot to left that cleared the wall for his third home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth Songco once again led off with a double and Thomas followed with a sinking liner to center that skipped off the body of center fielder Tyler Massey and rolled past him for an RBI triple giving the Saints a 3-1 lead. An RBI groundout by Mike Gilmartin made it 4-1.

The Saints extended their lead in the fifth as they sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs. Alonzo Harris led off with a double and Breland Almadova walked. Nate Hanson singled through the left side to load the bases and chase starter Jeremy Strawn. Left-handed reliever Josh Tols took over and, on a 3-2 pitch, walked Songco to force in a run and make it 5-1 Saints. Thomas added a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1. He finished the night 2-3 with a triple, home run, four RBI and two runs scored. With two outs Tanner Vavra looped an RBI single to right to make it 7-1.

That looked like it was going to be more than enough for the Saints and they would cruise to victory with the way starter John Straka was going. His lone mistake early came in the second on a solo homer by Anthony Gallas, his second in as many nights, and fourth of the year.

In the sixth, however, Jake Blackwood led off with a walk and Gallas singled him to second. With two outs Cole Leonida ripped an RBI single to left making it 7-2. Robby Kuzdale got the T-Bones within two with a three-run homer to left, his second of the season, and the sixth home run in two games for the T-Bones. Straka went 6.0 innings allowing five runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five, but improved to 2-0.

Caleb Thielbar was solid in his 2.0 innings of relief allowing just one hit and striking out three.

In the ninth Ryan Rodebaugh retired the first two men he faced before back-to-back singles by Brett Wiley and Vladimir Frias. Rodebaugh, however, would get Blackwood to fly out to left to end the game and pick up his third save of the season.

The same two teams meet in game three of the four game series on Saturday night at CHS Field at 7:05 p.m. The Saints are TBA while the T-Bones send RHP Jordan Cooper (0-0, 0.00). The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive an Angry Bird Helmet giveaway presented by Walser. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities area, and heard on 106.1 BOB FM and 97.9 FM in the ballpark.
