Goldeyes' Inaugural Diversity Day June 4th

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes, in conjunction with NCI-FM and JS Furniture Gallery, are proud to present the Goldeyes' inaugural Diversity Day on Saturday, June 4th at Shaw Park when the Goldeyes take on the Lincoln Saltdogs at 6:05 p.m.
The City of Winnipeg is home to a wide variety of different communities, cultures, religions, and people. Diversity Day is meant to celebrate the spirit of inclusiveness "every game - every season."
"The Goldeyes' organization is a diverse family that includes players, fans, office staff, and hundreds of seasonal workers who all help to provide a fantastic experience for its fans," said Dan Chase, Goldeyes' Director of Sales and Marketing. "Together, we are proud to raise awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion."
Mayor Brian Bowman will be on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and recognize 2016 as the Year of Reconciliation for Winnipeg, building on the years of important work undertaken by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
"NCI-FM is very pleased to team up with the Goldeyes for Diversity Day, which is particularly important since 2016 is the 'Year of Reconciliation,'" said David McLeod, CEO of NCI-FM. "We have teamed up with local organizations to bring 80 Indigenous students to the game, as well as several leaders and Elders, many of which will be first-time attendees. Goldeyes fans can also expect to enjoy a few performers who will showcase local Indigenous culture."
Diversity Day features multicultural music and entertainment. The Goldeyes plan to recognize Jackie Robinson, the first African-American baseball player to reach the Major Leagues. Gilbert Baker, the creator of the Gay Pride Flag, will be in attendance and participate in an on-field presentation.
Goldeyes players will be featured in short video clips promoting the "You Can Play Project" dedicated to ensuring equality, respect, and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation and/or gender identity. "You Can Play" challenges the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by focusing only on an athlete's skills, work ethic, and competitive spirit.
Proceeds from each ticket sold for Diversity Day will be donated to the Rainbow Resource Centre.
Fans can enter to win prize packages from some of Winnipeg's diverse and multicultural restaurants. The night will also include a fun Diversity Day trivia contest.
