Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats have teamed up with the Northwest Indiana Military Support Network and the American Red Cross to host the first ever "Home Runs for Heroes" event at U. S. Steel Yard on August 21 starting at 1:30 p.m. The RailCats will also aid Miller High Life in partnering with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) in support of their "Give a Veteran a Piece of the High Life" program by serving as a drop off point for specially labeled marked High Life bottle caps and can tabs, it was announced today.
"Home Runs for Heroes" will be held on the U. S. Steel Yard concourse and will consist of a number of informational booths highlighting the different governmental services that are available to the veterans, military families and homeless veterans of Northwest Indiana. Gates to this free event open at 1:30 p.m. While this event is open to the public and will run to 4:30 p.m., those with tickets to the 'Cats 6 p.m. contest versus the Rockford RiverHawks may continue to take part in the event and remain in the stadium.
The RailCats are working with local businesses and community members to allow military personnel the chance to attend the game free of charge. "Part of the project is to make this not only an educational day for the attendees, but to make it a fun day of baseball as well for veterans and their families," said Patty Kostro, Manager of Corporate Sales for the RailCats. For more information about the RailCats "Home Runs for Heroes" event or how you can help, contact Patty Kostro at 219.881.7235 or visit www.railcatsbaseball.com.
The RailCats will also serve as a drop off point for Miller High Life's "Give a Veteran a Piece of the High Life" program. In partnership with IAVA, the nation's first and largest not-for-profit organization devoted to bettering the lives of veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and their families, Miller High Life is asking legal-drinking-age patrons to help support their program by donating 10 cents for every specially marked cap and can tab turned into participating locations. The program will "contribute up to $1 million in cash and experiences to help veterans enjoy some of life's little luxuries." Anyone who brings a minimum of 12 caps or tabs to a RailCats game at U. S. Steel Yard between August 13 and August 21 will receive a buy-one-get-one-free voucher for tickets to the Fan Appreciation Game on September 2 at 7 p.m. against the Schaumburg Flyers. More information about the "Give a Veteran a Piece of the High Life" program can be found at www.millerhighlife.com.
The RailCats open a nine-game homestand with a 7 p.m. contest against the Lake County Fielders on Friday, August 13. Join the 'Cats for a post-game fireworks show sponsored by First Midwest Bank and The Post-Tribune.
