
RiverHawks Sweep Twin Bill From JackHammers

Bud Long slugged a two out walk off home run to complete the doubleheader sweep as the Rockford RiverHawks (36-37) captured 7-1 and 4-3 victories Tuesday night over the Joliet JackHammers (37-36) at Road Ranger Stadium. Joliet dropped to a fourth place tie and are one game ahead of Rockford in the standings.
Kyle Wright (6-2) went the distance in game one, surrendering one run on seven hits to lead the RiverHawks to a 7-1 victory.
The JackHammers started the scoring with two away in the second. Kevin Rios doubled and Roberto Mena singled home the lone Joliet run.
Rockford plated five in the bottom half and two more in the third against Rory Shortell (2-6). Jono Brooks put the 'Hawks out in front for good with a two run double. John Wagle added an RBI single and Rich Austin launched a two run homer for a 5-1 lead.
Shortell lasted four innings, surrendering seven runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Billy Petrick made his second appearance of the season, coming off the inactive list earlier in the day. The right-hander tossed two scoreless frames, striking out two in the process.
Travis Scott added a solo home run in the third with Brooks knocking in the final Rockford run.
Pitching was the story in game two as well for Rockford with Mike Wood going the first six innings in the 4-3 walk off victory.
The JackHammers managed on one run on three hits against Wood, but touched up Scott Roehl (4-1) for two in the top of the seventh. Jon Nelson corked a one out double to left field and Freddie Thon singled down the left field line to cut the deficit to 3-2. Brad Correll then doubled to center to tie the game at three.
The first two hitters in the bottom of the seventh were strikeout victims against William Jackel (5-2), but Bud Long lifted a 1-0 pitch past the wall in left for his first professional home run.
Joliet again scored first, putting up a solo tally in the first. Jonathan Wyatt doubled to right center and moved to third on a balk by Wood. Chris Colton lifted a sacrifice fly to center for the 1-0 advantage.
Rockford responded with one in the second and two more in the third against Michael Rocco, who made his first start of the season. Victor Buttler plated Patrick O'Sullivan with a single in the second and O'Sullivan knocked home two with a double in the third for a 3-1 Rockford lead.
Rocco went the first three innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Jackel went 1.1 innings in the loss, allowing the one run with four strikeouts.
The JackHammers and RiverHawks continue their four game set tomorrow night at Road Ranger Stadium. Devin Anderson (3-3) will take the ball opposite Kyle Ruwe (4-6). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with a 6:55 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
