Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Goldeyes jumped on RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock for five runs in the first two innings and the 'Cats could not recover, losing 7-2 in the series opener on Tuesday night. The loss drops the RailCats to 44-44 on the season and pushes them five and a half games back of Winnipeg in the Wild Card standings.
Former RailCat Mike Coles led off the game against Hiscock with a single and Winnipeg would load the bases for newcomer Barbaro Canizares, who hit a two-run single. Luis Alen would add a sacrifice fly to put the Goldeyes ahead 3-0.
Winnipeg would tack on two more in the second inning. Coles again singled and scored, as Yurendell de Caster hit a sac fly and Canizares added another run-scoring single to make it 5-0. Canizares hit another RBI single in the fifth to give the Goldeyes a 6-0 advantage.
Hiscock (4-6) took the loss and gave up a season-high six runs on 11 hits in five innings. Andrew Johnston, who had been on the inactive list since June 12, threw a perfect sixth inning in his return from a back injury.
Mike Massaro hit a two-run homer to right off of Goldeyes starter Ace Walker in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-2. Massaro leads the 'Cats with six homers on the season. Walker (8-4) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just the two runs on the Massaro homer. He struck out two and walked two.
The Goldeyes added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. de Caster hit his second double of the night and came on to score on Canizares' RBI-single. Canizares finished 4-for-5 on the night in his debut, driving in five of the seven Winnipeg runs.
Game two of the three-game series is at 7:10 on Wednesday night. Alberto Rolon (3-4, 7.70) will toe the rubber for Gary.
