August 21, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

He'll be No. 38 in the Fishlines game program when the Winnipeg Goldeyes return to Shaw Park next week, but, based on his first performance in a Winnipeg uniform, Barbaro Canizares could quickly become No. 1 among Goldeyes fans.

Canizares, who was signed earlier today, went four-for-five with five RBI to lead Winnipeg to a 7-2 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats at U.S. Steel Yard in Indiana Tuesday night.

The win ends Winnipeg's four-game losing streak and keeps the team's game and a half lead in the American Association's wild card race over the St. Paul Saints intact.

With the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, Canizares singled to score Price Kendall and Michael Coles. Josh Mazzola then drove in Yurendell de Caster to give Winnipeg a 3-0 lead.

The Goldeyes increased their lead to 5-0 in the second inning thanks to a sac fly from de Caster and RBI single from Canizares.

Canizares added another RBI single in the fifth.

After Mike Massaro hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, Canizares singled in de Caster in the top of the ninth for his fifth RBI of the game.

Aside from Canizares' spectacular debut, de Caster was a perfect two-for-two with an RBI and three runs scored.

Ace Walker picked up his eighth win of the season. He pitched six and two-thirds innings and only allowed a home run to Massaro. Brian Beuning got the final out of the eighth and pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

Gary's Steve Hiscock took the loss for the RailCats.

The middle game of the three-game set goes Wednesday night in Gary. Southpaw Chris Salamida (4-6, 4.04) will face Gary's Alberto Rolon (1-0, 10.55).

The pre-game show with Paul Edmonds on TSN 1290 begins at 6:30 p.m. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
