Scurry Fans Nine in Pheasants Win over Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants will go home this Friday with no worse than a series split in Lincoln.

Rod Scurry (5-6) struck out a career-high nine batters and held the Lincoln Saltdogs to just one run in seven innings in the Pheasants' 4-2 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs on Tuesday night.

The win was the Birds' second in a row, ensuring at least a split of the four-game series.

While the Pheasants offense collected just five hits, two key knocks from Reggie Abercrombie provided the difference. Abercrombie belted a double over the left fielder's head in the first inning to score Jared Bolden and give the Pheasants a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, he cracked a bases-loaded single with two outs for two more runs. Abercrombie was 2-for-4 with three RBI.

A fielding error followed when Cesar Nicolas hit a ground ball to third, and Bolden scored for the 4-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, Nate Wilder hit a solo home run to put Lincoln on the board. It was the only run allowed by Scurry, whose nine strikeouts were the most by any Pheasants starter this season. Scurry twice struck out the side, including a 1-2-3 second inning. He gave up just three hits total, and the homer was the only one for extra-bases.

Without the services of closer Alan DeRatt (absent for personal reasons), the Pheasants turned to two relievers to fill in apart from their normal bullpen roles. Tom Heithoff entered in the eighth inning, and worked out of a one-out jam with two runners in scoring position. Dan Cooper came on for the ninth. Matt Forgatch led off with a triple and scored on Bryan Pounds' one-out single, but Cooper induced Wilder into a fielder's choice groundout and struck out Miguel Chacoa to end the game.

Cooper earned his first save of the year.

Lincoln starter Tony Butler (2-6) suffered the loss. He gave up four runs, one earned, on four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out six.

The two teams combined for 21 strikeouts.

Game three of the four-game road series with the Lincoln Saltdogs is at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 22 in Lincoln, Neb. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
