Sioux City Explorers News Release
Gary, IN - Despite another very good outing from Zach Hedges the Sioux City Explorers could not hold onto the lead late as the Gary SouthShore RailCats took the series finale 7-6.
The Explorers scored a pair in the top of the first. After loading the bases with one out Trey Martin began his big day with a base hit to left making it 1-0. A Nate Samson ground ball to third produced a force out at home, but the throw to first to attempt a double play bounced away allowing the error to score the second run of the inning, 2-0 Sioux City.
The game remained that way for the majority of the afternoon as Zach Hedges once again dealt for the X's. He took a no decision but allowed only one run in seven innings on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
The lone run scored in the sixth when a lead off double from Michael Cruz eventually led to him scoring from third on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
Sioux City however responded in the top of the seventh. With runners at second and third it was again Martin who delivered a base hit to score the pair and put the X's back in front 4-1.
The bottom of the eighth is where the game flipped on its head. A lead off double by Michael Woodworth was followed by a hit batter and a walk along with a strikeout and a fly out to right. With the bases loaded and two out, Sam Abbott lined one into left to cut the X's lead down to 4-2. Tom Walraven then gave the RailCats the lead with a two out grand slam making it 6-4.
In the ninth, Sioux City again found some magic. With runners at the corners and one out, Martin singled to center to cut the deficit to one. Martin had a four hit, four RBI afternoon that included a walk and a stolen base. Sioux City tied the game with a Ademar Rifaela sacrifice fly to right.
Josh Vincent (3-2) picked up the win for the RailCats by getting Gary out of the ninth inning still tied.
In the ninth after two quick outs to start the inning, Daniel Lingua walked and stole second. After an intentional walk to Michael Cruz. Zach Racusin poked a ball down the right field line to score Lingua and walk it off for the RailCats.
Sioux City ends their road trip with a 4-3 record and will have Monday off before starting a six game home stand on Tuesday night against the Kansas City Monarchs.
