Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-32) lost 9-5 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.
The RailCats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Alex Crosby led off the game with a single to left and took second when Andy DeJesus reached on an error charged to Matt McCann at shortstop. Randy Santiesteban then doubled off the wall down the left field line to score Crosby and DeJesus. Santiesteban scored three batters later on a Wilfredo Gimenez sacrifice fly to centre.
Cole Fabio doubled down the left field line with one out in the top of the second and scored on a throwing error charged to Tucker Nathans that increased the RailCats' lead to 4-0.
Winnipeg cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Josh McAdams singled up the middle leading off and moved to third on back-to-back groundouts from Grant Heyman and Josh Mazzola. Tyler Baker fought off a two-out single to left that scored McAdams. Jordan Ebert followed with an RBI triple down the right field line.
In the bottom of the third, McCann drew a leadoff walk and scored from first on a double to left-centre from Reggie Abercrombie. Abercrombie advanced to third on a Josh Romanski lineout to right field. McAdams then reached on an infield single that scored Abercrombie with the tying run.
The RailCats went back in front 6-4 in the top of the fifth. Santiesteban and Colin Willis opened the inning with walks. Dale Carey laid down a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate in which Santiesteban was ruled safe on the ensuing throw to third base. Gimenez drove in the go-ahead run with a sharp comebacker that struck Goldeyes' starter Kevin McGovern. After Willis was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice, Tillman Pugh hit a two-out, RBI single to left-centre that plated Carey.
Romanski bunted for a single leading off the bottom of the fifth. Two batters later and with Romanski in motion, Heyman singled to right-centre, sending Romanski to third. Mazzola lifted a sacrifice fly to centre that scored Romanski and cut the RailCats' lead to 6-5. It was Mazzola's 446th RBI during his seven years in the American Association, which ranks second in league history behind Abercrombie (506).
The RailCats (27-25) responded in the top of the sixth on a two-out, RBI single from Willis. DeJesus scored after reaching first earlier in the inning on a close play on an infield single.
Pugh and Fabio hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the ninth to stretch the lead to 9-5.
RailCats' starter Daniel Minor (9-2) picked up the win, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in five innings. Minor walked two and struck out two.
McGovern (3-6) took the loss, allowing six runs, two earned, on six hits in five innings. McGovern walked four and struck out two.
Myles Smith was perfect over the eighth and ninth to earn his third save of the year.
Jack Charleston pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Goldeyes.
McAdams was signed before the game. The Calhoun, Georgia native hit .238 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 57 games last year for the Frontier League's Lake Erie Crushers. McAdams was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the seventh round in 2012 out of Calhoun High School in his hometown.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Alex Boshers (2-5, 5.65) takes on left-hander Lars Liguori (1-5, 3.98). Tickets for all Goldeyes' home games are on sale now by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca/Goldeyes, or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the box office at Shaw Park.
