Cleburne Railroaders News Release
CLEBURNE, Texas - Chase Simpson clubbed a three-run homer - his first as a Railroader - but Cleburne gave up a late in run in a back-and-forth, 7-6 loss to the Chicago Dogs at The Depot on Saturday night.
In a game that featured a franchise-record six homers, the Dogs took the lead for good on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the 8th. After Patrick Young walked the first two batters in the 8th, Will Mathis came on and walked the first batter he faced before inducing a double-play on a liner to third that Patrick Palmeiro caught out of the air.
After the double play, Mathis hit a batter before the wild pitch scored the winning run.
Trey Vavra opened the scoring with his second homer against the Railroaders - a two-run shot in the 1st inning. Angel Rosa halved the deficit with his second solo homer against Chicago in the bottom of the 1st.
Tony Rosselli restored the two-run lead with a solo homer in the 2nd before Simpson's three-run homer and Cam Monger's solo homer gave Cleburne its first lead of the game in the 3rd.
The Dogs got a run back on Steven Perez's near-inside-the-park homer that was ultimately just an RBI triple in the 4th. Edwin Arroyo clubbed his second homer in the season series - a two-run shot that gave Chicago the lead again in the 5th inning.
Rosa went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Trevor Sealey reached three times and scored twice out of the leadoff spot. K.C. Huth went 1-for-4, but the six-through-nine hitters in the Railroaders lineup combined to go 1-for-15 with six strikeouts. Collectively, Cleburne struck out 14 times on Saturday night.
Cleburne starter Josh Hodges went 6.1 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts in his second consecutive start against the Dogs.
The Dogs bullpen combined for five more scoreless innings, including the three scoreless frames from Jared Carkuff - who struck out a season-high eight Railroaders in relief.
The teams wrap up the season series at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday. Cleburne will send RHP Patrick Mincey to the mound, and the Dogs counter with LHP Evan Smith. Good seats are still available and can be purchased at www.railroaderbaseball.com or by calling (817) 945-8705.
