Chicago Dogs News Release
Cleburne, Texas. - The Dogs struck out a single-game franchise record 16 times en route to a series opening 7-4 loss to the Cleburne Railroaders Friday night.
For the second time in as many Fridays, the Palmeiro family did major damage to a Dogs starting pitcher, as the duo of Rafael Palmeiro and Patrick Palmeiro combined to hit three home runs and drive in six runs in the first three innings of Friday night's game.
Rafael got the scoring started for the Railroaders with a lead-off solo home run in the second inning. Three batters later, after a Cam Monger double, Patrick clubbed a two-run home run to put Cleburne up 3-0. With two outs in the third inning, Patrick struck again with a three-run home run. The home runs were the seventh and eighth of the year for the younger Palmeiro, and the sixth of the year for the elder.
Cleburne kicked the extra point in the bottom of the fourth after Blake Grant-Parks led the inning off with a triple. Angel Rosa drove Grant-Parks in with a sacrifice fly to put the Railroaders up 7-0.
Josh Goossen-Brown made his 11th start of the year for the Dogs, lasting just four innings, and giving up all seven runs. Goossen-Brown took the loss, dropping him to 4-4 on the year.
The Dogs began their climb back with two runs in the top of the sixth thanks to two hits and a pair of walks. Newly-acquired Dog Rubi Silva drove in the first run with an RBI single, and Joe Benson followed two batters later with one of his own.
The Dogs struck out seven times from the sixth through the eighth innings, before mounting one final rally in the top of the ninth. Four of the first five batters in the inning reached for Chicago, with Edwin Arroyo and Silva plating two more runs. With two men still on base, one out, and Treysen Vavra at the plate representing the tying run, Cleburne turned to their closer Shawn Blackwell. Blackwell coaxed a double play from Vavra to end the game.
Jared Mortensen made the start for Cleburne, going six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, and striking out 10. The right-hander earned the win, his third of the year.
The Chicago bullpen worked the final four innings without allowing a hit to lower their season earned run average to 2.97
The loss drops Chicago to 19-32 on the year while Cleburne moves to 18-32 on the season with the win.
The two teams will resume their three-game series Saturday at The Depot at Cleburne Station. Chicago will send left-hander Scott Barnes to the mound against Josh Hodges for Cleburne.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:06 p.m. The game will be broadcast at www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts/ with the Crowne Plaza Pregame Show beginning at 6:46 p.m.
