Prince Albert Raiders News Release
The Prince Albert Raiders fell 6-1 in Winnipeg against the ICE to end their three game road trip on Sunday night. The green and gold went 1-2-0-0 on the Manitoba swing, beating Brandon on Friday, and losing to Winnipeg on Saturday and Sunday.
The Raiders had a chance to open the scoring with a 5 on 3 powerplay just 1:54 into the contest, but couldn't find the back of the net. In fact, Daniel Hauser stopped all 11 shots he faced in the period for Winnipeg, keeping Prince Albert off the board.
At the 10:56 mark of the first, the ICE opened the scoring. From the right circle, Owen Pederson threw a pass in front for defenceman Graham Sward. All Sward had to do was redirect a shot into a wide open net with Max Hildebrand unable to slide across in time. Sward's fourth goal of the season gave Winnipeg the first and only goal of the period, as they went into the second with a 1-0 lead, and the shots even at 11-11.
The Raiders tied things up 3:30 into the second period just after their powerplay expired. Seth Tansem fired a hard shot near the point that Hauser stopped, but the rebound sat right near the goal mouth. Carter Anderson came crashing in and banged home his 14th goal of the season. He picked up his third goal in as many games, as it tied the score at 1-1 early in the middle frame.
Owen Pederson took matters into his own hands in the second half of the second period. The ICE forward scored twice just over two minutes apart to give Winnipeg a 3-1 lead. Max Hildebrand was under fire in the second, stopping 22 of 24 shots. The Raider netminder allowed 33 goals on 36 shots after 40 minutes.
In the middle of all the action, the intensity ramped up as well. A combined 17 penalties were dished out in the second period, with a handful of them being roughing calls after whistles. Terrell Goldsmith was kicked out of the game after a checking from behind penalty, and after going back and forth with each other in the first period, Justice Christensen and Conor Geekie dropped the gloves in the second. Both players landed some heavy shots on each other, with Christensen eating a couple of big punches. They were both escorted to the box to serve five for fighting.
After all was said and done, a long second period came to an end, with the ICE holding a 3-1 lead, and a 36-22 edge in shots.
Winnipeg scored three more times in the first 11:20 of the third period to take a 6-1 lead, thanks to two goals from Zack Ostapchuk and another by Ben Zloty. Hildebrand saw his night come to an end after giving up six goals on 42 shots, as Tikhon Chaika took over between the pipes.
Chaika stopped all five shots he faced in relief, but the ICE would go on to win the game by a 6-1 final.
Prince Albert is back in action on Friday night against the Moose Jaw Warriors for their final home game of the season. Puck drop is 7pm.
