Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Green Bay, WI - June 12, 2012 - After a series of close games, the Rafters (5-9) were handed their worst defeat of the season Tuesday in Green Bay, losing at the hands of the Bullfrogs (7-7) by a 9-3 mark at Joannes Stadium. The 1,033 in attendance saw a bit of a sloppy game and a one-sided affair despite a clean and even start.
After missing three games, back from a toe injury, Pat Kelly (FR, Univ. of Nebraska) scored on a double from Austin Neary (FR, Western Carolina Univ.) to give Rafters' starter Cam Seidl (JR, UW-Stevens Point) a 1-0 lead in the second. Seidl cruised through four.
The Appleton, WI native faced one over the minimum through 3.2 IP before walking his first batter. He would survive the first walk. It would be the last time the Rafters would do so. The next five walks issued by Rafters' arms, three of them by Seidl, would score, as the Bullfrogs pounded the Rafters in the middle innings.
The Bullfrogs scored two in the fifth, a pair in the sixth, a couple more in the seventh, and a trio of Bullfrogs came across in eighth. Five of the nine runs came unearned on three Rafters errors, and Wisconsin Rapids, despite the mistakes, once again had fewer errors than their opponents. The `Frogs made four errors.
The Rafters had two unearned tallies of their own, but once again could not capitalize on a bevy of scoring chances. The Green Bay turned double-plays with two runners on in the first and second innings. The Rafters left on 10 baserunners. Wisconsin Rapids drew six walksnot a one of them touched home.
Seidl (0-1) took the loss, the Rafters sixth straight defeat, tying their worst stretch of baseball from a year ago. The Rafters lost six in a row twice in 2011, one of which came to start the season. Ben Graff (2-1) picked up the win scattering four hits and five walks for one-run ball in his five innings. Joel Klock tossed a four-inning save.
After a 5-3 and first place start, the Rafters are alone at the bottom of the eight team NWL South Division, yet they are still only four games out of first in the cluttered southern side.
The Rafters will return home Wednesday to take on the second place Wisconsin Woodchucks (8-6). First pitch is at 7:05 for Riverview Family Clinic Night at Witter Field. The Rafters will be giving away Thundersticks at the park.
