Alexandria Beetles News Release
Mankato, MN - Michael Reed delivered Alexandria's first quality start of the season and the bats stayed hot, pounding out 14 hits for the second consecutive night, as the Beetles (4-9) handed the Mankato MoonDogs (10-4) their first home loss of the season 10-2.
In his third start of the season, Reed went six innings and allowed just two runs and four hits to improve to 2-1 and for the second straight night, every Beetle starter reached base at least once.
Ty Taylor took the loss for the MoonDogs, lasting just 3.2 innings and giving up seven runs, five earned.
Alexandria has made habit of big early innings and Tuesday was no different as the Beetles put up four in the first and two in the second.
With one out in the top of the first, Tanner Vavra singled up the middle and Johnny Tolson reached on an error. Ben Moore stayed hot with an RBI double to right and Jimmy Pickens followed with a two RBI double up the left center alley, coming around to score himself on a Josh Carpenter sacrifice to make the score 4-0.
In the second, Dylan Raper led off with an opposite field double down the line in left, scoring after a sacrifice bunt and fly, and Tolson hit a two-out homerun to left, his first of the season.
One night after Alexandria pitching put only two zeros on the scoreboard, Michael Reed surpassed that in the first three innings to preserve the lead. The Beetles kept adding on, with three consecutive singles in the fourth, by Vavra, Tolson and Moore, extending the lead to 7-0.
Mankato cut into the Beetle lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a walk and two doubles, but Reed and two relievers, Scott Sanderson and Andrew Busby, shut down one of the best lineups in the Northwoods League for the final four innings.
Alexandria scored its final three runs on a Will Fulmer fielder's choice and a two RBI Vavra single in the seventh.
The Beetles and MoonDogs play the rubber game of their three game set at 7:05 CDT Wednesday.
