Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, WI - Once again the Rafters came up just short of a victory, losing 5-3 at Witter Field Thursday night to the La Crosse Loggers. Giving up three runs in the top of the ninth to lose their third lead of the night, the Rafters left the tying run at the plate in the bottom half of the inning.
Cole Webb (SO, Valparaiso Univ.) rebounded extremely well from a couple rough outings. The Tulsa, OK native went six strong innings, tossing six for the first time since June 11th. Against a great Loggers lineup the right-hander allowed just two runs, scattering seven hits and just a lone walk. He fired three strikeouts as well.
The Rafters took the first, second, and third leads of the night. Alex Bacon (SO, Univ. of North Florida) doubled home Sean Godfrey (SO, Ball State Univ.) to make it 1-0 in the first. After La Crosse tied it, Bacon's seventh homer re-took a one-run lead in the third.
The teams traded runs again in the sixth, which included La Crosse outfielder Bobby Juan's third homer in three games, and the Rafters took a lead the 3-2 into the ninth. Tommy Organ (JR, Univ. of North Florida) retired the first six batters he faced, to make it a string of a perfect 10 in-a-row in his first two relief appearances of the year. In the ninth though, against the seventh and eighth batters he faced, he allowed both to reach. A walk and a single, and Organ's night was left in the hands of Skyler Debilzen (JR, UW-La Crosse).
The 2011 All-Star, Debilzen, got an out at home on a suicide squeeze attempt but then hit a batter and allowed a single that scored two. A passed ball would score another and La Crosse had their first lead of the night, 5-3, going to the bottom of the ninth.
Jacob Dorris, the league leader in strikeouts, pitched a near-perfect ninth. He allowed one hit, an odd spinning roller that starter foul and proceeded to hit the first base bag, before mowing down three straight Rafters to finish off the night.
Debilzen (0-4) took the loss and Dorris (5-1) snagged the victory from the jaws of defeat.
The Rafters (3-5, 19-23 overall) travel to Madison for two in the Duck Pond before finishing the three-game set against the Mallards (6-1, 22-20 overall) at home on Sunday at 1:05. First pitch Friday is at 7:05 pm with Augey Bill (1-0, 2.08 ERA) going for the Rafters.
