Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WAUSAU - The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters would rally past the Wisconsin Woodchucks as they would score three runs in the eighth inning to hand the Woodchucks their ninth straight loss.
The Rafters would start things early as they would get two runs in the top of the first inning. Zack Belanger would bring home Donnie Dewees on an RBI single to left center field. Jonathan Moroney would come into score when Robbie Coman grounded out to Woodchucks' shortstop Madison Carter.
The Woodchucks would cut the deficit in half after Matt Tellor would hit a fly ball to center deep enough to score Tyler Stieb on the play. It would be Tellor's Northwoods League leading 29 RBI.
The Rafters would get a pair of runs thanks to a two-run home run from Donnie Dewees that carried over the right field wall to give the Rafters a 4-1 lead.
The Woodchucks would get one run back as John Clay Reeves would hit a blooper into right field allowing Stieb to come around and score again.
The Rafters would get that run back after Erik Payne would hit a hanging breaking ball from Woodchucks' starting pitcher Anthony Dixon over the left field wall to take a 5-2 lead.
Trailing by three in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Woodchucks would gain the lead thanks to a grand slam by John Clay Reeves that traveled over the center field wall. It would be the second grand slam for the Woodchucks this season as Matt Tellor would hit his back in Eau Claire.
The Rafters would again take the lead back thanks to a three-run eighth inning. George Ragsdale would come into score after Austin Orewiler's wild pitch allowed him to score. Dewees would be a burden again after he singled up the middle to bring home Charlie Curl and Taylor Stell to give the Rafters an 8-6 lead.
The Woodchucks would get one run back in the bottom of the ninth as Rob Bennie's pinch hit single would allow Reeves to score, however with the tying run on second base Kirby Taylor would fly out in foul territory in left field to end the game.
The Woodchucks will travel to La Crosse as they begin a three game series at Copeland Park. The Woodchucks will be back at Athletic Park on Tuesday, June 25 as the Loggers make their way to Wausau. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 with the gates opening at 5:35.
