Pomeroy's Slam Lifts Honkers to Seventh Straight Win

(Rochester, MN) - Michael Pomeroy (Grand Canyon University) belted a grand slam in the seventh inning to break a tie and lead the Rochester Honkers to a 9-4 win over the Alexandria Blue Anchors on Thursday June 20 at Knute Nelson Memorial Park in Alexandria, MN.

Tyler Baker (Wichita State) started a two-out rally for the Honkers in the top of the first inning with a single to center field. Alex Greer (Iowa Western) reached when he was hit by a pitch and Pomeroy followed with a RBI single to bring in Baker and claim an early 1-0 lead.

Aaron Overbeck, of Alexandria, reached on a throwing error by Rochester shortstop Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) to start the bottom of the third inning and scored on a two-out from Keegan Dale to tie the game at 1-1. The run, unearned, was the only run allowed by Honkers starting pitcher Nick Dolsky (Oklahoma State.) Dolsky, who made his first start of the season, struck out six and allowed four hits and no walks in four innings.

Greer reached first on a dropped third strike to start the top of the fourth inning, stole second base, and scored on a single from Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton) as the Honkers re-claimed the lead. Rochester added to its lead in the top of the sixth inning when Greer singled, stole second again, and scored on an error committed by Alexandria second baseman, Dale.

The Blue Anchors responded with a pair of runs, thanks to RBI from Aaron Gretz and Aaron Overbeck in their half of the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Spencer Koopmans, the starting pitcher for Alexandria, took a no decision as he allowed three runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Reid Roper (Illinois) led off the top of the seventh inning with a single and Baker and Greer each drew a two-out walks to set up Pomeroy's grand slam to give the Honkers a 7-3 lead after six and a half innings of play. Rochester added a pair of runs in the eighth inning as Roper and Burgess each picked up RBI singles to extend the lead to 9-3. With the single, Burgess extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Alexandria got one run back in the eighth inning, but Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) was able to strand a pair of runners and keep the lead safe at five runs heading into the ninth. Schwarzbach pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the season. He allowed one run on three hits in three innings while striking out five. Alex Tenorio (Menlo College) picked up the win (2-0) in relief for Rochester as he allowed two runs on one hit in two innings. Mickie Kuening took the loss (0-1) for Alexandria. He allowed four runs on two hits in one inning.

Pomeroy finished the game going 2-for-5 with five RBI. Tucker Tharp (Kansas) added three hits on the night. Roper also collected a pair of hits while driving in one and scoring once.

Rochester (14-9) will look to extend its seven-game winning streak on Friday June 21 at 7:05 p.m. in Alexandria (4-18.) Brandon Stennis (Doane College) is slated to make the start for the Honkers. Friday's game will be the last of a four-game road trip for the Honkers before returning home to Mayo Field to host the Duluth Huskies on Saturday June 22, at 7:05 p.m.
