Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, MINN. - Two Stingers notched their first home runs of the season, propelling Willmar to a 9-6 victory over the Alexandria Blue Anchors. Manager Matt Hollod slated Zack Tillery as the designated hitter and Tillery (Florida Gulf Coast) did not disappoint.
After Alec Sol̮̩ and Tyler Leffler were retired to begin the game, Marc Flores singled, Michael Suchy doubled and Max Kuhn walked to load the bases for Tillery. Tillery's homer to left became the team's second grand slam against Alexandria and third overall on the season. Tillery's line with three hits and four RBI earns him the *CDI player of the game*. After the game, Tillery's average is at a sky-high .474.
Chris Barnett may not have been expected to produce offensively the same way that a DH might, but the catcher out of Loyola Marymount gave the Stingers a 7-2 lead in the third inning on a three-run blast as if he were batting cleanup. The home run, along with Tilery's in the first, increased the team's total to 17.
Working with a 4-1 lead from that point forward, Sheldon Lee stifled the Anchors for the rest of his time on the mound. After previously appearing twice in relief, Lee (San Francisco) made his first start of the season, throwing six innings and yielding just one earned run along with five hits.
Michael Murray on the other hand, made his first appearance out of the bullpen and impressed the fans at Bill Taunton Stadium, striking out five in 2.2 innings. Murray (Florida Gulf Coast) had previously made all three of his appearances on the season as a starter. Murray's efforts in relief were good enough to earn him a save, the team's sixth of the season.
After winning three straight against the Blue Anchors, the Stingers hit the road for a double header against the Mankato MoonDogs (11-10). The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 6:05 and the Stingers will use Colin Poche (Arkansas) and Chris Kubitz (St. Cloud) as their starters.
NOTES: The Stingers' .277 batting average is the second highest in the NWL. The Stingers lead the NWL in runs scored with 128, an average of 6.1 runs per game. The Stingers next five games come against the Mankato MoonDogs.
