Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, WI - Completing their final road trip of the season, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (10-23-1, 26-41-1 overall) returned home to finish their season in a three game set against the Lakeshore Chinooks (17-16, 34-34 overall). A four-run fourth inning from the Chinooks put the game out of distance, as the Rafters rallied, including clubbing two home runs, but could not complete the comeback, falling 7-4.
Augey Bill (SO, Univ. of Arizona) pounded the zone with strikes all night long, but was a bit too hittable on Friday night. 79 of southpaw's 105 pitches were in the zone. The left-hander allowed a season high six runs and 12 hits against the Chinook order, who have tallied double-digit hits against the Rafters in six of the eight games between the teams.
In his return to Witter Field, former Rafter Michael Jurgella starred. The catcher from Plover went 3-for-4, scoring twice, and knocked in a run. Two of his hits went for extra bases, two nearly identical opposite field doubles to right-center field.
Wisconsin Rapids began the comeback trail in the bottom of the fourth. Down 6-0 already, they found two runs off of Chinook starter Rex Morrow when Alex Bacon hammered his eighth home run, his second opposite field shot, with a man aboard.
The club would add another in the in the fifth on a Pat Kelly (FR, Univ. of Nebraska) triple, his fourth of the season. Josh Cyr (JR, Univ. of North Alabama) unloaded on the first pitch he saw in the sixth over the center field wall to make it 6-4.
Down 7-4 after Lakeshore added a run in ninth, Wisconsin Rapids brought the tying run to the plate in the final half inning on the bat of Brandon Hohl (JR, Univ. of Illinois). The second-year third baseman had hit the ball hard all night long and did once again in the ninth. It was right at Chinook shortstop Luke Maldanado for a 6-4-3 double play. Pat Kelly (FR, Univ. of Nebraska) flew out to end it at 7-4 in the Chinooks favor.
The loss was the Rafters seventh against the Chinooks. Lakeshore has been their toughest out this season, going 1-7 against the club.
With two games left, the Rafters host the Chinooks again on Saturday. Post-game fireworks for the final time will commence following the game, sponsored by Veolia. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm from Witter Field with Cam Seidl (0-3, 6.54 ERA) going for the Rafters. He will be opposed by Jason Hoppe (4-2, 2.42 ERA) for Lakeshore, who threw a complete a game against Wisconsin Rapids in his only outing against the club.
