Rochester Red Wings News Release

Josh Rabe had five RBI including a three-run home run as the Red Wings beat the Columbus Clippers 6-5 Thursday night at Frontier Field.

The Clippers jumped ahead early in the second inning, taking advantage of two walks and a wild pitch by Rochester starter Matt Ford to score a run. In the third, they added to the lead with a two-run home run by Carlos Pena.

The Wings answered back in the bottom of the inning against Clippers starter Tommy Phelps, with back-to-back singles by Jason Tyner and Jason Bartlett followed by a two-run double by Rabe, narrowing the lead to 3-2 Clippers.

In the top of the sixth Clippers catcher Wil Nieves got thrown out of the game for tossing his helmet arguing balls and strikes, and Manager Dave Miley was also tossed. Two batters later, Kevin Reese hit a two-run double off of reliever Ricky Barrett to boost the Clippers' lead to 5-2.

Beau Kemp pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Wings. At the plate for the Wings, Andres Torres doubled in the bottom of the seventh. Tyner followed with a walk and Barlett got on base on an error by the shortstop that scored Torres. The next batter Rabe hit a controversial three-run shot to left field. Appearing to hit off the in-play yellow on the top of the fence, it was originally ruled as a double, but changed to a home run giving the Wings a 6-5 lead. Pat Neshek got the save, pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth and recording four strikeouts including the final two batters of the game. Matt Smith got the loss for the Clippers.

Rochester pitchers cobined to give up 10 walks, but also recorded 10 strikeouts in the win.
