Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Left fielder Raul Gonzalez went 2-for-4 and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth as Indianapolis posted a 4-3 win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Thursday evening at Victory Field. The Tribe has now won five straight contests and nine of its last 12 overall.
The Indians, who also increase their lead to six games over Toledo in the International League's West Division, improve to 31-21 overall. The Red Barons, who fall two games behind Rochester in the IL North, fall to 29-24.
A Scranton/W-B miscue in the sixth led to the game-winning score for Indianapolis. Gonzalez tagged a single to left, moved to second on a wild pitch and came plateward on a wild throw from the Red Barons shortstop.
The Indians opened the scoring with two runs in the first. 3B Yurendell de Caster got things rolling with a single through the left side and Gonzalez followed with a double to left before 1B Chris Richard smacked a two-run single to right. Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs on the night.
Scranton/W-B responded with all three of its runs in the fourth. CF Chris Roberson, 2B Joe Thurston, C Carlos Ruiz and 1B Shawn Garrett opened the frame with four consecutive singles. Thurston then came plateward on an RBI groundout, while Thurston scored on a sacrifice fly.
Indianapolis answered the call with a run in the fourth to knot the contest at three. SS J.J. Furmaniak reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came plateward on C Carlos Maldonado's base knock up the middle.
Tribe RHP Josh Sharpless (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) worked three frames for his first Triple-A victory. RHP Terry Adams (0.1 IP) and LHP C.J. Nitkowski (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) were credited with holds, while RHP Jonah Bayliss (1.0 IP, 1 SO) notched his seventh save of the campaign.
Red Barons RHP Talley Haines (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER) was pinned with the loss, falling to 0-1. LHP Jim Crowell (5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO), a Valparaiso native and former University of Indianapolis star, did not factor in the decision.
The two teams return to Victory Field Friday night at 7 p.m., for game two of the four-game set. RHP Jason Roach is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while LHP Matt White is expected to get the nod for Scranton/W-B.
Howard Kellman and Jim Barbar will have the TV play-by-play (WHMB-TV 40), while Scott McCauley and Greg Rakestraw are set to call all the action on radio and the internet (ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com).
