Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - For the first time in franchise history, the Richmond Flying Squirrels were defeated at The Diamond, falling, 5-2, to the Reading Phillies in the finale of a four-game series in front of 9,334 on Sunday afternoon. The win allowed the R-Phils to avoid a Flying Squirrels sweep in the first-ever Eastern League series played in Richmond.
As they have in each game in the series, the Flying Squirrels took the game's first lead with a run off R-Phil's starter Vance Worley in the second inning. Nick Noonan sparked the uprising with a lead-off double down the first base line. After he advanced to third on a Roger Kieschnick single, Noonan scored when Tyler La Torre bounced into a double-play, and the Squirrels led 1-0.
Richmond starter Mike MacDonald kept Reading at bay for the first three innings, but they got to him for a pair of runs and the lead in the fourth. Brian Stavisky and Michael Spidale started the inning with back-to-back singles and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Pinckney. Kevin Nelson brought in Stavisky to tie the game with a ground-out to second base, and Reading took its first lead of the series when Keoni DeRenne supplied an RBI single.
MacDonald (0-1) surrendered another pair of runs in the fifth as Reading took a 4-1 lead. With Freddy Galvis aboard via a single, Tagg Bozied clubbed his second home run of the season to left field. The home run allowed was the first of the season permitted by MacDonald as he absorbed his first loss of the year over five innings.
Ronnie Ray relieved MacDonald in the sixth and the R-Phils tacked on a run in the inning. Tyson Gillies contributed an RBI single to bring home DeRenne who had also singled, and Reading led, 5-1.
The Squirrels got a run back in the sixth, finally chasing Worley with an RBI double from Andy D'Alessio. However, Worley (1-2) earned his first victory of the season, lasting 5 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits.
Left-hander Matt German worked two scoreless innings out of the Reading bullpen through the eighth inning and right-hander Michael Stutes worked a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
The Flying Squirrels are slated to open a three-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats (Minnesota Twins) on Monday night at The Diamond at 7:05 PM. :LHP Clayton Tanner (1-1, 2.61) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Carlos Gutierrez (0-0, 5.00) for New Britain.
